Why Growth Isn’t Always a Win—And What to Do About It

Hi Reader

Let’s talk about something we’re all chasing—but few truly prepare for: Growth.

Whether you’re a scrappy startup or a mature company eyeing market dominance, chances are you’re hearing some version of this at leadership meetings: “We want double-digit growth by 2025.”

But after working with dozens of fast-scaling leaders, I can tell you—this kind of ambition comes with landmines.

One of the CEOs I worked with told me once, “I don’t recognize people in the corridors anymore. How can we hit our targets when we’ve lost that close-knit teamwork?”

He leads a cloud service provider that grew from 300 to 700 employees in just three years. They even closed a major acquisition that made them the largest in their region. On paper, everything looked like a win. But in reality? Things were starting to fall apart.

It’s a classic problem. And here are the 5 Growth Traps a Fast-Growing Company Can Face.

Let’s break them down—and talk about how to sidestep them before they trip you up.

1. The Process Paradox

In the early days, ad-hoc systems can get you surprisingly far. But once you scale? They crack.

What to do: Start documenting scalable processes before they’re needed. It’s not about bureaucracy—it’s about building a bridge between speed and sustainability.

2. The Founder Overload Spiral

Founders tend to wear all the hats—until the hats start wearing them.

What to do: Get comfortable stepping out of the center. Your job isn’t to be the smartest in the room—it’s to build a room full of smart people.

3. Communication Chaos

Growth often creates silos—where teams unknowingly duplicate projects or adopt different tools.

What to do: Build a communication strategy that moves in all directions—top-down, bottom-up, and sideways.

4. Silo Syndrome

As departments scale, so does turf protection.

What to do: Remind your leaders that they’re a leadership team first—and functional team leaders second. That means prioritizing collaboration over control. Call for “followership” over leadership. It works.

5. Culture Drift

When you grow fast, it’s easy for culture to become collateral damage.

What to do: Culture isn’t a vibe—it’s a system. Treat it like one.

Hi Reader! Did you know that companies with aligned, effective top teams are nearly twice as likely to achieve above-median financial performance? According to McKinsey, that number comes from a global study of nearly 30 companies. It measures how teams see themselves across 17 dimensions — from clarity of roles to psychological safety. It caught my attention because a few years ago, I saw the opposite play out in real time. I joined a leadership team that looked impressive on paper. Everyone...

Hi Reader! McKinsey's latest State of AI report shows 88% of organizations are now using AI regularly. But here's the catch: only 6% are actually seeing real value from it. That massive gap tells us something important. Most teams haven't figured out how to work with AI in a way that actually helps rather than creates new problems. The Tools Everyone Refuses to Give Up I worked with an organization where teams were testing different AI tools and frameworks. Each team found something they...

Hi Reader! We romanticize great teams. But the more I’ve worked with leaders and teams, the more I’ve realized that most of what we believe about building high-performing teams is wrong. Here are five myths I see holding back smart, well-meaning leaders from building teams that actually work: Myth 1: You need "A-Players" to build a high-performing team Let’s get something straight: high-performing teams aren’t built from a collection of all-stars. In fact, when every team member is focused on...
